Six volunteers have come together to help support people receiving treatment for cancer in Wrexham.
Each year, around 20,000 people are diagnosed with cancer in Wales, and these volunteers want to make a small difference to those receiving treatment at Wrexham Maelor Hospital.
The group, formed of health care professionals from the Shooting Star Unit and previous patients, came up with the idea after a fundraiser, Grace Parry, donated 100 of The TREATment Bags to the Unit after her treatment on the unit.
Grace, who was 19 at the time of her diagnosis, had six months of chemotherapy on the Shooting Star Unit in Wrexham, followed by two weeks of radiotherapy at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd. She wanted to thank the Unit for their support during her treatment and aimed to raise £150 with her sisters. They went on to raise £10,000 and used this money for various causes, £5,000 of the money went on The TREATment Bags for new patients on the Unit.
The Bags included small, luxury comforts to support patients through their cancer journey. The feedback of the Bags was extremely positive, and staff knew they needed something else once they ran out.
So, the Star Box was born!
The Star Box will enhance the experience patients have during their visits to the Shooting Star Unit. Specialist chemotherapy nurses are fully aware that the clinical aspect of a patient’s care is paramount towards achieving a positive response to the disease process. However, the be able to compliment this with timely information, compassion and supportive gestures can make a difference to a patient who is undergoing treatment.Anne Marie Humphreys, co-founder of the Star Box and Senior Sister on the Shooting Star Unit
