Malcolm cycles 800 miles in memory of his wife

Throughout the month of May, Malcolm Pitts will be swimming 10 miles and cycling 800 miles to raise money in memory of his wife, Yvonne, who passed away in 2006 after battling breast cancer.

Malcolm has been raising money for Alaw Day Unit, Conwy Ward and the Emergency Department at Ysbyty Gwynedd since 2007 and has so far raised more than £20,000.

In August 1982, after being married to Yvonne for only nine months, Malcolm was involved in a road traffic accident and was on a life support machine for three weeks. The crash left him with multiple injuries including a head injury, brain damage, epilepsy and very little memory. Yvonne cared for him during this time, but roles were reversed when Yvonne was sadly diagnosed with cancer at the age of 36.

Jennifer Owens, Sister on Alaw Day Unit, said: “Malcolm has been fundraising for us for years in memory of his wife Yvonne, and over that time has raised such an incredible amount of money allowing us to provide added extras for patients on the Unit.

“We are so grateful for Malcolm’s fundraising and are amazed at the lengths his swims and cycles to raise it! Thank you so much for your ongoing support, Malcolm!”

Each year, Malcolm has increased his swimming and cycling to raise as much money as he can for the hospital that cared for Yvonne and has made a huge difference to patients, family and staff members with his work.

Malcolm said: "It's very emotional work to do but so worthwhile. Thank you so much for family, friends and the local community for their continued support."
