Glittering ball to take place this weekend organised by breast cancer survivor

A mum of four is organising a glamourous Christmas Ball to raise money for the North Wales Cancer Centre at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, after she was diagnosed with breast cancer a year ago.

Keen horsewoman Ruth Hogan thought the large lump in her breast had probably been caused by one of her horses who had banged into her. Being only 44-years-old she never dreamt that it could be breast cancer because of her age.

“I had gone to my GP about another matter and I mentioned at the very end that I had found a large lump in my breast, and after my doctor had checked it she said I needed to have it looked at properly,” said Ruth.

Following scans and biopsies, Ruth was given the devastating news that she had a 6cm tumour. She has since undergone three surgeries to have it removed, breast reconstruction and radiotherapy.

“What kept me going throughout all this time apart from the amazing support from my husband, Jamie, and the fantastic staff at both Ysbyty Gwynedd and Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, was that I made sure I carried on supporting my children at premier horse shows across the country.

“After surgery I refused to stay in I’d travel to Scotland or wherever the horse show happened to be, and this massively helped me.”

Ruth is now thankfully cancer free and to say thank you to the team at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd and to Myddelton School, in Denbighshire, she has organised who promises to be a glittering ball at the school on December 10.

“I just want to say thank you to Rhian the breast cancer nurse at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, to the wonderful radiologist Andy Gash at Ysbyty Gwynedd, and to my incredible surgeon Mr Khattak who was so reassuring throughout this process,” said Ruth.

“Tickets for the ball are £60 for live entertainment and a four course dinner, and there’s going to be an auction with some incredible prizes.”

She added: “There are some tickets left so I hope people will snap these tickets up as it’s going to be a great night!”

Tickets can be purchased by emailing Ruth or Myddelton College on 01745 472201 or email: hogancaravan@hotmail.co.uk.
