Wrexham Maelor's lead nurse Tracey Harris is busily training for next month's London Marathon

Tracey's London Marathon training includes running 10km home and taking cold showers

One of this year’s London Marathon runners running for the North Wales Cancer Appeal is Wrexham Maelor’s Clinical Governance Lead Nurse, Tracey Harris, and she’s been getting tips from the former Radio 1 DJ Chris Evans

The NWCA has four runners in this year’s marathon taking place on October 2.

The appeal supports the North Wales Cancer Centre at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd-raising millions towards new equipment for the benefit of patient’s treatment at the cancer centre.

Each NWCA runner has to pledge to raise £2,000, and Tracey Harris is already well on her way to reaching her target helped by her Wrexham Maelor colleagues who have organised bake sales and so on. She’s also organised raffles, a duck race and is auctioning ‘pre-loved’ items on Facebook Marketplace and other social media platforms, in addition to local businesses sponsoring a shirt which she will wear on the day of the race. She’s already raised in excess of £1,000.

Tracey, 53, who has been in nursing for 33 years, said running helps her to relax and is a great stress reduction technique.

She has even started to run ten kilometres home after a busy day at the hospital, and at present is running on average 60 Kilometres a week.

“I’m getting quite a few tips from the broadcaster Chris Evans who has written a book called 119 Days To Go, and thanks to him I’m now taking daily cold showers which really does help with my recovery.”

“I am very excited to be running the London Marathon as it’s always been an ambition of mine and definitely on my ‘bucket’ list,” said Tracey.

“I’ve been a keen runner for a long time, and I’ve done many half-marathons but never a full marathon but I enjoy a challenge!”

Chair of the NWCA Carol Pritchard Jones added: “By running the London Marathon and raising the required funds you will be helping to make a real difference to the lives of patients and their families.”
