Inclusive Children’s Book delivered to Children’s Wards
To help celebrate Sensory Loss Awareness Month and Disability History Month in November and December, Centre of Sign Sight Sound visited all Children’s Wards to donate awareness books.
The Catrin and Abi books are stories to teach children about deaf awareness and introduce them to British Sign Language.
Ceri Harris, Head of Equality and Human Rights for Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, said: “By providing inclusive children’s books to our resources at our hospitals we are ensuring understanding and visibility for all our patients, as well as being fun to read.
“We are so grateful to the Centre of Sign Sight Sound for their generosity in donating these sets of books and our continued partnership to meet the needs of our patients and their families.”
The books are based on the imagination of Abi, a 7 year old, who takes readers to the moon, to the zoo, looking for dinosaurs, and so much more, to help them learn about deaf awareness and BSL.
Each book, whether it be in Welsh or English, contains a QR code that takes the children to the story presented in BSL and to extra signs for them to learn.
Sarah Thomas, Managing Director of Centre of Sign Sight Sound, said: “We hope that the donation of books will bring joy to the children who are spending time on the wards. The stories are fun and fully accessible, printed in Welsh/English and using QR codes to access the audio and signed versions along with and the opportunity for everyone to learn some BSL vocabulary.”
A huge thank you to Sarah and the Centre of Sign Sight Sound for this fantastic donation.
