I have been fortunate to have met so many inspirational people within the last 37 years of my nursing career within Mental Health. I’ve also had so many opportunities to develop and move forward since qualifying as an SEN (State-Enrolled Nurse… for the young ones, google it - they’re on their way back!) back in 1983 to being appointed as one of the first Consultant Nurses in Wales in 2000.

I have learnt so much from staff in a variety of roles, and every single patient and their loved ones I’ve ever been in contact with have taught me so much.

I have learnt so much from staff in a variety of roles, and every single patient and their loved ones I’ve ever been in contact with have taught me so much. I feel privileged to have been alongside them in their dark difficult moments and equally privileged to celebrate their happier times, when they’ve moved on in their recovery.

This was perfectly illustrated when a person I used to care for interviewed me for my recent Director’s post – and was the person to ring and offer me the job, which was so emotional for me; how far we’ve come!

The face of Mental Health services has changed so much in the last 37 years, enduring many challenging periods. Throughout, one thing has remained constant: the compassion and dedication of the majority of frontline staff who each day go the extra mile, and the absolute privilege I’ve felt every day being able to make a difference to an individual in their hour of need, or to improving our services.

I feel privileged to have been alongside people in their dark difficult moments and equally privileged to celebrate their happier times, when they’ve moved on in their recovery.

I am finishing my career working on redeveloping the Ablett Unit at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, alongside a fantastic team.

This is my opportunity to give something back to the community I first trained in and still live in.

I would like you to consider “paying something forward” (a great film and a must watch); in lieu of any birthday or retirement gifts for my party on the 10th April, I would like you to support this deserving cause.

Thank you

Jill x
